Cleaning Tip

Time to put another pin to the test.

This one, everyone will appreciate if you have a child in your life who loves to draw.

The experiment: Does WD-40 remove crayon stains from painted walls?

Recently my two year old daughter was roaming around our house with a purple crayon. She went knocking on our office door for Daddy to come out and play. While knocking she still had that purple crayon in her possession, leaving random purple streaks on our door.

I found this, and just shook my head, figuring my husband will just have to paint over it. After combing the internet for cleaning solutions, I came across this one via Pinterest...

...and decided to give it a whirl.

I sprayed WD-40 across the door and immediately wiped it off. (Supposedly it'll take the paint off if you leave it on too long.) The crayon came right off! The paint stayed in tact, and I had a much cleaner door. One streak, didn't come completely off, I'd say 98% gone, leaving a faint mark. I've posted before and after pictures for you to see for yourselves.

Now I have to agree with my husband, I needed a control experiment. Would hot soapy water, a sponge, and elbow grease have done the same thing without the stinky smell of chemicals? Time will tell as I'll try it the next time I see crayon on the wall. (Crossing my fingers that won't happen, but lets be realistic!)

The grade: A-
